It would make more sense to say there are no theists in foxholes, or at least no True Believers™. If their god doesn’t want them to die, then shouldn’t he be protecting them from the bullets? And if their god does want them to die, then there’s nothing they can do about it. Jumping into a foxhole is an acknowledgement that they don’t really believe any of that, and realize that we are on our own to look out for ourselves.
