Busy Days

Building a house next door for my daughter and her family. The shop is almost done, and the house foundation is half set up with the inside panel in, and half the rebar tied. Footings were poured yesterday. Gonna be a beauty.

8 foot basement walls are too much to do alone. We hired this part.

30 foot x 40 foot garage. Sunset tonight from the property.

  1. Jim do you do the design and draw up the plans for these? If so you have a grand talent. To be able to see in your mind that which is not yet real is grand. Hugs

    1. Thanks Scotty. This was actually my daughter and her husbands creation this time. We worked on it for quite a while and we were just not quite getting the flow. Then it came to her one night and it’s perfect. 1400 feet on a full basement. Perfect size really. The rest of the house we are building. The shop is coming out really nice too. The setting is incredible here.

    1. Thanks Mary. This is slightly more slight of hand by the church. Calling Soares a Native Brazilian, is like calling me a Native American because I was born here. White Europeans still run South America. The Chinese guy does look part Chinese. I don’t know his story, but back in the 70’s and 80’s, Mormons were proselytizing refugees. God brought them here, he must want them baptized, right? It was a tacky move by the church that played on people during such crisis

      1. You must not worry about ledge. Everything around here has to be dug with care. In fact, hubby dug the hole for our son’s house, which was being built on a ‘slab’. He got down 4 feet in one corner and called our son (he was working out West) and said, “You’ve got enough room for a basement!” So there was a last-minute change of plans and it freed up some room on the main floor. It was built as a bachelor house but five years later he had three children – guess who just built another piece on?? 😉

            1. Oh the soil here is perfect for building. 3 feet of topsoil and clay, then it’s pit run gravel and a little clay. Drains well and stable. Very lucky to have good dirt on top.

            4. Have you tried striking a rock with a rod? This book I read claims someone once successfully procured enough water to quench the thirst of a multitude via this method. Can’t hurt to give it a try.

            6. My best friend put in a well in north Idaho and went 700 feet and gets a gallon and a half a minute. $25,000 and that was 15 years ago. Ugh

  7. Oh, I do so love house construction! Brilliant lay-out for that size house. The basement will increase their living space, as well. Our friends are building a smaller home (right next to their old, two-story, rambling house) and have been getting lots of comments. Theirs is 1200 square feet with propane heat, wide doorways (in case of wheelchair accessibility) and it’s attracting lots of attention. We would love to do it, but our house is right on the water and we’d have to give up the view to move to our woodlot up the road aways. Plus, I’d have to clean out the attic here, which has been accumulating treasures for 40 years — that in itself is a daunting task and dims the spark of attraction for a newer, smaller home.
    They are very fortunate to have a talented craftsman in the family and I see they’ve got their priorities straight – the garage gets built first! 🙂

    1. Yes on the garage. I learned that lesson long ago when I ran out of money right when the house was done. I do like this plan. Quite creative of her. Wondering where she got that from…
