Understanding evolution is one way to atheism, and by far the most popular Christian finger-pointing bullet point I come across. But, as deconverts, this reason which we eventually come to understand is very low on the list. In fact many believers accept both evolution and creation can co-mingle (if that is your reconciliation) Personally, I shied away from evolution and only knew the basics of that faith by drawing from a poisoned well.
Comparing the goodness, mercy, love, and outcomes of Gods word, to what we read in scripture and what we see objectively certainly raises an eyebrow. Not just on a few cherry picked points either, but in a systemic, parenterally obvious display of contradiction. It’s widespread virtually on every point.
Prayer certainly did some of us in. Match up a couple of unseen miracles in a generation and you can sell enough tickets to support entire cities. It’s that rare. The pilgrimage sites are living proof that miracles are so rare, people will travel the entire globe to get a glimpse of the mere location—or speculation. Miracles are merely events unexplained in the mean-time. But, dig a little deeper and every one has an explanation, unless one is afraid to look. Prayer works the way mindfulness works. Pretty simple concept to achieve what you focus on. The miracle is you!
Scientific understanding of how the brain functions in a group, or in a crisis is another stopper. While faith thrives in non-evidentiary vacuums, it falls apart quite nicely for some when the evidence is presented. Neurology is a quirky business, that’s why the controlled testing. We now have a pretty decent understanding of how we are fooled, even by our own doing at times, out of sheer desperation.
Then, like my brother, he never even believed a word of it. The entire scam is a bullshit point some personality types just see it from the onset. Lucky them.
There are more, but only one can begin the journey to learn them all, which I consciously avoided for many years. Prayer was the beginning and the end for me. The contradictory nature of the gospel and scripture took a close second. The other points are just the cherry on top.
Hello Jim. I was exposed to Christianity in my late teens. I was willing to believe, but too much kept standing out to me as wrong. But what really drove me away from religion were the people in the “faith”. The fact these godly loving followers of the man of love could publicly hate me just because of something I was born with and unable to change was not something I could reconcile with what was said every time we went to church. At age 18 one of the leaders of the SDA church leaders walked up to me and said now that I was an adult I had a duty to follow the doctrines more closely so I did not cause any of the younger church members to stumble and fall. I knew what the younger members were up to and they were grand heathens at a young age. Knowing that if any of the people found out I was gay I would be turned on I quit. Then after I came home from the Army I did not care who knew and sure enough, as soon as they found out I lost any friendships I had in the church and was basically shunned. If that is the behavior supported by their loving god I want no part of it. Then over time I realized I simply had no need for a deity. Then I found atheist web sites and educational material and it all fell into place for me. Hugs

Well a Scottie, in all fairness it isn’t their own personal belief that shunned you. After submitting to religious authority something bad happens to people. They say and do things that are not them. I would’ve never believed it had it not happened to me. I know others say the same thing. Submitting your will is a big part of abrahamic faith, then we grow into faith and division parroting the words of the preachers as though they are our own. None of the things I said were my own thoughts. That literally changed in a day.

As a young person it tears at you. You keep hearing how you are an abomination hated by god and blamed by people for the most horrible things that go wrong in life. You pray and pray and pray for all you are worth that God will fix you, will take the curse off you. It doesn’t work. Later you realize that you were not the horrible abomination they preached your kind were, you are just a human with born with a different sexual orientation and that it is natural and normal. If you are lucky you learn to like your self, and find others that like you also. You move forward with living your life. I admit I get angry at people who use their religion as a club to attack me and make me less of a person. To deny me equal civil rights, and accuse me basically of “destroying the country”. Their god has become tiny and of little power, and now most of them cling to political power if they can get it because it does for them what their god can not. Hugs

Reading your story it looks more you came in contact with a church of Christendom (and not of Christianity). People should follow Biblical doctrines and not human or church doctrines. when you would read the Bible (= Hebrew, Aramaic , Judaic and Messianic writings) thoroughly you would have come to see that God is a God of love and that He has given the world enough time to find the way to Him.

What did me in at an early age was evolution and the wonders of science and the fact my parents never raised me religiously. Later on, as I studied the history of Christianity it obviously pointed to it being created by humans and evolving and changing like every other belief system. Like, if Christianity is true, then why didn’t people worship the “true God ” until less than 2000 years ago??? Hmm…. also of course comes the moral hypocrisy that even if God does exist, I wouldn’t want to worship him regardless!

I grew to feel same way. How could I align myself with a morality of death and torture, then justify it through endless excuses (apologetics). I really believe that “if” there was a god, the real test would be to check our integrity against the obvious immorality of the masses and religion. 2.4billion Christians isn’t the few. Strait is the gate and narrow is the way, and few there be that find it. Who will say the king has no clothes?

Oh, and it is the MDA Coalition that is responsible for Muslims catching up in numbers to christians. His reasoning was amazing, his conclusion literally fantastical.

Churches are fast losing followers through Baby Boomer deaths and Millennials’ cynicism. They need all the replacements that they can get, just to stay even, and pay the priests/preachers.
I was going to use the word ‘Donations,’ but I recently found that some Protestant churches echo the Catholic, and make it an obligation, like “mandatory volunteer”, and call it a tithe…. although one recent Apologist spelled it ’tilth’ an archaic version of ’tillage’ – area under cultivation. Perhaps they were plowing all the wallets, for a bountiful crop of greenbacks. 😳

Atheism isn’t exactly a belief someone can be born with, is it. I mean, can one be an atheist before they know or understand theism?
My partner was born with being pointed at any religion, and since meeting me she now calls herslf an atheist, but that question nevef came up before. She has no religious background, so I think she is just a human without a label. What do you think?
By the way, we are not married, and neither of us has children. Maybe that makes her an atheist?
But it is funny you should bring up the so-called 11th commandment, go forth and multiply. Just this afternoon I was looking for some data and came across this: Muslim women average 2.7 births per womb, and christian women average 2.3 births per womb. Those are the highest birth rates of any section of people in the world. Atheists were grouped with agnostics and non-declared affiliaters of religions (nones) and have only a 1.6 birth rate average. The funny thing was, while muslims are increasing in numbers, christians are declining because their death rate is higher than their birth rate, and/or more people are declaring themselves nones. Still, christians are the largest single group of people in the world despite all that. But why would they want us to do their job and outpopulate the Muslims. Do they really think that because we have no morals we will wipe out the muslims for them? Man, they really are delusional!

All children are born Atheists. They don’t believe in any God until they are indoctrinated. Only later in life, when they have to explain and justify their lack of belief, do they adopt the title, Atheist. Even then, many of them have been convinced that “Atheists” are evil and perverted, worshipping the Devil, eating babies and fucking animals, so they don’t want to use that description. One fellow-blogger admitted that he didn’t believe in God, but labelled himself as a New-Age Christian. 😯

You seem to mix Christianity with Christendom. The true followers of Christ (Christians) did worship and still worship the One true God. It are trinitarians who made Jesus into their god and as such even became to worship a god who has less similarities with the main God than in certain polytheist groups.

I never understood the 3 in 1 deal myself, but most Christians after the 5th century would deem you a heretic 😂 Oh, and the OT God is even worse then the NT Jesus/God so some sects like the Marcionites thought there were two separate gods! I never had issues with atheism when I ‘believed’ (prolly cuz deep down, I knew), but the error (hypocrisy) of religion never moved me to atheism. I recall one day someone had (holy?) water from a spring near Fatima or Medjugorje. I rubbed some on a pre-cancerous keratosis on my hand. In a few days, the blemish was gone. Miraculous, right? I never thought so, but maybe (at the time). I was always secretly aware of my ‘unbelief’ and said that prayer (from Mark 9:23-25) many times. How’s that working for me? Since I was never a biblical literalist, I did not struggle with evolution. I did with the ‘problem of evil,’ about which I taught lessons.

That’s nonsense! Your premise is false. ‘There are no gods’ – it begins and ends there. Only after that conclusion can one point to differences of opinion. Unless you are atheist, you do not know that. The way you use it, ‘believer/believes/beliefs’ are a misnomers.

Bill first of all all atheists believe that there are no gods. (That is a belief). Secondly concerning the beginning of things there are different beliefs. Some atheists believe in the Big Bang, others in a black Hole, others believe in something else, but they all try to pin a belief on the matter of coming to exist. You call “believe” belief” misnomers so you as an atheist would not believe in certain things and would not have a belief? so you would not believe you are a man or would not believe the earth is round?

You do not understand. But you need not. You believe (not conclude). Furthermore, the origin of the universe has nothing to do with being atheist. Believers and agnostics alike may ascribe any theory concerning universal origin. As you seem to say, pick one. When you use words incorrectly, it is by definition a misnomer. Regarding my gender and the shapes of planets, I rely on science, not my opinion (though gender is more complex for some). You have said things about atheism/and what atheists think which are untrue. Some of what you said I do not understand. To say atheists are believers is wrong and that is because you do not understand.

Agreed. While evolution and neuroscience were maybe a final nail in the coffin for me…for me too prayer was the beginning of the end for me. Not that it made me an atheist but it certainly made me suspicious about buying what they were selling. For me it was the whole afterlife system of heaven and hell, and how most of the devout followers selectively followed certain parts of it and ignored the rest, or just casually decided for themselves that God won’t care too much if I play a little loose with this verse in the Bible. Given that there was an India side to my heritage and a lot of family that I got to know in India when I was 19 that was what really convinced me that something was wrong with the whole system. So much of my family of a different religion were good people and it just seemed clear that goodness and morality weren’t tied to a particular religious story. To me that meant that there was either no God, and if there was a God than no religion was exactly right. The details of the stories in each religion were immaterial in a literals sense to the true nature of the universe. And that there was as much wisdom to be found in the pages of a novel as there was in any Holy Book.

Dear Swarn Gill it is a pity you decided to leave Christendom and did not want to go to Christianity because you preferred to keep to the ” the whole afterlife system of heaven and hell,” of those false christians instead of following the Biblical sayings of those matters and coming to the different denominations in Christianity who do not keep to the human doctrines (like the Trinity) but keep to the biblical teachings and as such know that once a person dies he is death and cannot think or act any more. Purgatory and hell as places of torture are human and philosophical teachings (not biblical teachings). the bible is also very clear about the Kingdom on earth where the majority of believers shall be allowed to enter (if they fulfil the requirements).

Again, there are a myriad reasons to find the whole enterprise bunk. And I suspect your interpretation is just another interpretation. Every Christian leaves out the parts they don’t like and keeps what they do. The extremity of the torture and reward system is not relevant to me in the end. For me, the Book of Genesis was one of the main factors that started me on a fast track out of Christianity. Evolution is certainly one piece of this puzzle, but it’s science (and common sense) in general which this book doesn’t agree with. Also I had a problem with many of the contradictions in the Bible (don’t we all?), and got tired of the explanations after a while. So basically it was God’s word which got be to turn away from God’s word. Irony.

Dear TheCoverAtheist, you probably got a wrong inside from the Book of Genesis, which not at all contradict with the way the world would have come in existence. Perhaps you were taken by Creationists who do take the account literally being days of 24 hours, instead seeing how the original texts talk about ‘day’ being ‘periods’ of much longer time than 24 hours or even one day, god Himself telling it goes about more one day being more than 1000 years.
To get a better view on the Genesis book, perhaps read some comments on the Bereshith and how it should be interpreted. (Have for example a look by Jeshuaists or Jews, to see how People of God interpret that Word of God)

Even if we extend a day to be a couple of millions or billions of years that will not reconcile the genesis account with what is known in science, the best that would do is reconcile the age of the universe and that’s all
The main error in genesis 1 is the ordering of events. Genesis has the earth, fruit trees, herbs and grasses existing before the sun, the moon and the stars. We know that this is not true
Genesis also have day and night existing before the earth, sun, moon and stars. This is not what is known in science, what we do know is that day and night are a result of the earth rotation and the light from the sun. So there is no way that we would have day and night before the earth and the sun
Also, the geological and fossil records are in contradiction with the account of Noah’s flood
Also the amount of diversity in the human population could not have arisen from only two ancestors of Adam and Eve combined with an eight people bottleneck of Noah’s flood in a relatively short amount of time
Also the amount of living species we currently have couldn’t have arisen from the animals in Noah’s flood in a short period of time
The tower of babel as an explanation for the origin of language does not tally with what is known about the history and development of language. And what was the point of the tower of babel. We have built higher structures, gone to space and achieved more things despite the many existing languages than a bunch of our ancient ancestors could do with the available technology

Are you serious
Read genesis 1 account of creation, take a notebook or a piece of paper and write down in chronological order what came before what based on genesis
Just do a little research on the history of biblical old earth creationism and you would see that this your statement is nothing but rubbish. Biblical old earth has only existed since science found evidence for an old earth which was not 2000 years ago
Gap creationism originated in the 18th century as a result of findings in geology
Progressive creationism was first hinted at by Georges Cuvier in the 18th century as a result of findings in geology
Theistic evolution is also arosed as a result of findings in geology, paleontology and biology
It is the Hindus that could be said to hold an old earth view for more than 2000 years ago
What you are saying is not even what the bible says. The bible states clearly that it was the result of Adam and Eve eating the forbidden fruit that was the reason that sin and death entered the world
“Through one man sin entered into the world and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because they had all sinned.” (Romans 5:12)
1 Corinthians 15:21–22
“For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead.”
According to the bible it is
Man->Sin->Death
But according to you it is
Death->Man->Sin
The bible account of man before death is rendered false by the very existence of fossils
The view that plants could be killed is not one held by the bible. In fact
Genesis 9:3: “Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things. But flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat.”
Leviticus 17:11: “For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls:”
Revelation 21:4 “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death‘ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
Isaiah 65:25 “The wolf and the lamb will feed together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox, and dust will be the serpent’s food. They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain, says the LORD”
It is quite clear that plants are not considered as something that can die by the bible rather the bible describes plants as withering and not dying

So, I haven’t specified what’s wrong with Genesis, yet you already conclude I probably got it wrong. But yes, a young aged earth is certainly one of the issues with Genesis. But even if Genesis specifies an old aged earth, it doesn’t get anything else right. I would go into more detail on the issues but Jonathan has pretty much done that.
But I’ll add something else. Evolution is a scientific fact which has been repeatedly observed. For evolution to occur, there must be natural selection, which means that species that can’t adapt to the environmental conditions die out. There can’t be natural selection without death. If you believe in an old aged earth, then you believe that the earth has been around for millions/billions of years BEFORE Adam and Eve came along, and that there was no death before they sinned. How could the earth support such a large population of species after all that time? But OK, if animals did die before Adam and Eve then that means there was death in the world and that the Bible was lying. Or are you going to tell me that you don’t believe Adam and Eve are literal beings too?

Adham (or Adam) means man from the (red) earth. The first human being also had to eat, so plants were killed to be their food. As such death was already in this world before their sin. Why should the Bible be lying when that death was there already before their sin?

You’re being ridiculous and against the belief of your Christianity. Look it up. Plant death is no part of the death that is spoken of. Here, from a Christian website https://answersingenesis.org/death-before-sin/biblically-could-death-have-existed-before-sin/

Well, plants were eaten. The Bible doesn’t count that as ‘death’ since it doesn’t specify plants as living things. But everything else is, and the Bible was clear that there was no death before they sinned. In other words, everything was vegetarian initially. Of course this can’t work either from an evolutionary point of view, since many animals can’t live as vegetarians. You can claim that there was death before sin, but then you’re denying core Christian principals, might as well deny that Jesus died for your sins too while you’re at it…

I do believe the original quote was a few years older than HGW. But that doesn’t really matter, that wasn’t what I was talking about. If you have two eyes, you should be able to see. Yet more people who have two eyes are blind than people who have no sight at all.

Why should you fear hell? It is just the grave and no place of eternal torture.

At 5 years old, and being told by adults if I did not accept Jesus Chtist as my saviour (whatever the hell that is), I was going to spend eternity (???) BURNING!!! in hell, if you don’t think that is FEAR then you are not human. No, nowadays it is nothing, once you know how to see gray. At 5, you see only black and white, and adults know that. To tell a small child anything like I was told in mental abuse. And theists see no problem with abusing their kids.

A person can accept Jesus as their saviour but that does not have to mean to accept a burning place or eternal torturing which is not at all according to Scriptures. The strange thins is that you say “theists see no problem with abusing their kids.”. Every abuse of a person is something wrong.

Have you ever lived in fear? Were you ever so scared of going home that you would prefer to stay out in the cold till you got frostbite? “Every abuse of a person is something wrong.” Brother, don’t talk about things of which you do not know. I was abused by my father. I was abused by my schoolmates. I was abused by the adults at church. Not occasionally, but every day of my young life. And your god did absolutely nothing. Not a god damn fucking thing.
Take your religion, and peddle it somewhere else. And in your next incarnation, I curse you to come back to an abusive family, abusive friends, and abusive theists. Not to cause you pain, friend, but to teach you what it is you so calmly say is wrong. And don’t bother believing you are going to heaven, you aren’t. You are coming right back here to a hell on earth. And once you have seen hell, then you can talk about glory, because there is no such thing…

Luckily as a believer we do not believe in reincarnation and do know that what man does is not God’s fault, though you seem to blame God for things that people did to you.
We as Biblical believers do not believe we go in heaven, because that are human doctrines. We do believe in a Kingdom of God here on earth as in heaven, by which people like you and us can receive a place in the Kingdom when we lived according to the Law of God.
It is a pity and a shame you got caught up in such false doctrines and in religious groups which did not live according to Bible teachings. We feel sorry for you and do hope you shall once have your eyes opened and come to see that the way to God is much better than peoples ways.
The person who is replaying you has undergone several very bad issues, even has got two near death experiences, so he may say he too had his share of bad luck and having seen and undergone very horrible events. though I (may say so) did not get me carried away by those adversaries of God and by the bad and horrible things which came over me. I tried to be stronger than them, though I do agree some have been such traumatic experiences that half a century after certain things happened they still cause certain psychological problems. (By ageing certain hidden things came back playing parts – even for having teeth treated bringing up counter reactions for a matter that happened so long ago) (so where do you get it from – or get the pretension from – that you are the only one in the world who is being raped or abused and that others would not have had such bad experiences?)

(For as much as we do know the Jehovah’s Witnesses ) We do know that they like our religious group also believe in two different groups, the few sheep, the 144000 going to reign with Christ and the great flock going to be partakers of the Body of Christ in the kingdom here on earth (and not in heaven).

Sound wisdom. Interpreted from the Bible. For others Saturday worship is a heaven of hell issues as well. Love that Bible. Purgatory, hell, outer darkness, all from the love of god. You are going to hell…but I love you. Lol

I never made any such claim. All I did was tell you my experience, to which you said it was wrong. That is like slapping someone’s fingers for being a serial rapist. Wrong? And I am sorry to hear that you have been through your own traumas, but your words certainly did not show that. I take back my curse, but you cannot avoid reincarnation just because you do not believe in it. Your spirit has been here before, and it will be here again. It is part of life, and cannot be avoided.
I don’t know who you see as adversaries of something that does not exist except in the minds of yourself and others like you, but don’t expect me to ever be deluded again. I’ve been there, done that, and have no need to ever do that again. If you think you can convince me otherwise, you are sadly mistaken.

Do you have remembrance of your previous being? What lets you think there is a reincarnation?
LikeLike
It is not the memories of previous incarnations that are important, but the memory of 2 near-death experiences in this incarnation that gave me this knowledge. Twice I came close to death, and twice I choose this life over an offered new life. Once could have been a fantasy, but twice was quite convincing.
On top of that, I returned to my life here with a lot of new ideas (to me) that it took me about 5 decades to truly understand, if I can even say I truly understand them yet.
As for reincarnations, I have had millions of them, starting from the time life first started on earth, and before that too. I will have had billions before I will be able to start to understand what life is about. Life is a force, an actual form of energy, shared by all living beings.
Go ahead and think I am crazy, most people do. I don’t mind. I know I am not.

I find that too often we judge others by the standards of society … or by our own personal perspective on life. Simply because a person has not shared your experiences does not mean they didn’t happen. And beyond that, similar experiences could very well have happened to others but they are simply too afraid of being “judged” to share them.

Hi Nan, Nice to hear from you. I know you do not think I’m crazy, nor do most of Jim’s readers. I was not meaning to include people I consider my friends in “most people.” Mainly I was thinking of true believers, because there is no room for my unsanity in their world view. But that is up to them to decide. Thanks again for the kind words.

Raw, have you ever studied the worldwide common threads in Shamanistic practices? Curiously, your story has many common themes to these ancient/tribal customs that have been nearly eradicated. If your interested I have a long video that may interest you.

No, Jim, I have not studied anything close to this. I am one of those weird people who do not want to have their ideas influenced by others until I am pretty confident that I understand what it is I am thinking. This may not be the scientific approach, and I risk having to rediscover the wheel, but I will know it is my wheel and not someone else’s.
But having said that, I would probably find your video quite interesting now. I just wonder what you mean by long, lol. Is it on the internet, or is this a thing you own. Tell me more, please.

Just an hour and a half, but it may interest you to find the truth you seek has also been found by others that were not influenced by the scientific approach.

That does interest me, I just like to know my own conclusions first. Kind of like an observer who does not want to influence the observees (which is impossible, of course!), I am the seeker who does not want to be influenced by other seekers. It is not easy to not be influenced by others, especially when I have read more in my lifetime than I can specifically remember, but yet I try to watch as carefully as I can for things that may have affected my thoughts and ideas. I believe I am allowed to be quirky like that, after all I am human–even if I wish I weren’t.

Maybe you have a gift you could share. Learning from someone’s vast experiences should be no threat to your journey. There were too many similarities to overlook, but alone we can sometimes fail to have enough experiences in our small sphere. He has respectfully compiled many traditions that would have been lost. There is enough in there to validate your search, and maybe add a little bit too.

I’ve never been afraid of failing. When I used to be a card-player, I had a saying that I lived by, “You cannot win until you know how to lose.” This saying, or versions of it, inform my life. You learn more from failure than success, and every failure brings you closer to success.
As for a gift I could share, I cannot imagine what one might be.

Coming from someone who’s a former Christian, your ‘Biblical’ beliefs don’t sound very Biblical, such as your non-belief in people going to heaven and your recent claim that there was death before sin and an old aged earth. You do realise that 99.999% of Christians don’t believe in those teachings right? What makes you think that your (alternative) views on the Bible are right, whilst everyone else is wrong?

Indoctrinating children is wrong. Getting them caught up in the manufactured euphoria of belief is a cancer in human intellect, raising up a breed of conceited parroting robots that have not their own thoughts. Here again, you seem to be proving the point of “train up a child”. Had you been taught to think for yourself
In a variety of disciplines we wouldn’t be hearing this rhetoric from you now.

The majority of those calling themselves Christian, have made Jesus Christ into their god and as such do not follow Jesus his teachings nor worship the same God as Jesus and his disciples worshipped. Jesus, the son of man and son of god, declared his heavenly Father and showed mankind the way to the only One true God, the God of Israel, or God of Abraham Who is only One and not two or three, and Who is an eternal Spirit Being no man can see and live.
Why you think there would be a “contradictory nature of the gospel and scripture “. The Gospel or Good News of the Kingdom of God falls in the Plan of God and was already mentioned in the Hebrew and Aramaic Scriptures (Old Testament), pinpointing to the Greek Scriptures (New testament) All those books part of what we call the Bible are very consistent. There is no contradiction in them. The only problem with several denominations is that they follow not the teachings of Christ, but follow human made doctrines, like the Trinity, which brings up all matters which seem to contradict previous sayings of the Bible or make sayings of Christ and God very confusing and very misleading and/or foolish.

With all due respect, you can’t be serious. No contradictions? Lol. When someone accepts the wrong version of Christianity by reading the Bible and talking to a few friends, that is Christianity. I won’t allow myself to whitewash the gospel any longer because I have the special version. Your statement falls flat to reality. The remits of the gospel is chaotic discontinuity—whenever it is attempted
