How one mans ideas can affect an entire nations morale

As bienniums go, it’s been a beguiling couple of years since forty five was inaugurated. During the November election at that time I was building my house and staying with some Seventh day Adventist friends that were glued to Fox News. Initially they were very nervous—was god going to pull through after all the nail biting and prayer? Then came the eruption into a scene similar to the picture below—their prayers had been answered. I took a quick pic of the tv screen and went to bed, wondering what the hell just happened—They did it. Really unbelievable that is the best our country could do. But, had he not been elected, that too, would be gods will, so why the worry? Why pray? Is god going to alter physics and tweak his envisaged, all-knowing master plan?

Many of you know I am basically A-political. I don’t care to get worked up anymore over things I can do nothing about—life’s better without the frustration and what was I going to do, anyway?

Nothing has really changed. Another government shutdown (so what) with both sides virulently despising each other. And truthfully, if either party had carte blanche power what then?Be the opposition...we do need that!

America will survive this as it has every other presidency. The peaceful exchange of power will take place and amaze the world—happens every time. Hopefully in 2020 we can find someone to make all Americans proud.

Watching this I thought of how Dorian Gray’s wicked deeds were etched into the facial features of his portrait, so the cultural stereotypes linked to a name come to be written on the faces of their bearers. What’s in store for the future bearers of the name Donald?

  3. Like yourself, I have no real interest in politics (or pro sports for that matter) and never understood the rah rah emotions people express for either. So I was somewhat amused by the Clinton supporters complete meltdown after DJR’s election win. It reminded me of a similar meltdown by the Romney supporters when Obama won four years earlier.

    On a side note, my life changed for the better when I unplugged the television twenty years ago to escape the constant barrage of negativity and manufactured outrage to pursue more productive uses of my time.

    1. Smart man. I got Rid of tv in 2007. Life is much better for me this way. I miss out in the new fads and words though. Oh darn. But really, you can look away…But fight… we shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end. We shall fight…mostly amongst ourselves embroiled in propaganda of our own making.

  4. What I find far more fascinating than the president is what’s happened to congress over the last few decades. They seem to have forgotten that it isn’t the person occupying the White House that runs the country, Congress does. Congress is charged with making law, with appropriating funds, levying taxes, with declaring war, with ALL of the authority of running the country. The president is not a lawmaker, not a ruler, but a glorified bureaucrat whose job is to make sure the laws passed by Congress are enforced. Period. Oh, the president may publically be a figurehead, but as far as actual power goes? The office of the president was envisioned as having very little actual power, and that was done deliberately when the Constitution was written to prevent the office holder from abusing their authority.

    But over the years what Congress has instead done is yield more and more of its authority to the office of the president. It has granted the president broad powers to wage war without the permission of Congress, it has given up much of its power over international relations, it has granted the president widespread and genuinely frightening “emergency powers”. It has permitted the president to issue “executive orders” that contradict or warp the meanings of the legitimate laws passed by Congress… The list goes on and on.

    Why have they done this? Simple. They are, for the most part, a bunch of spineless cowards who are terrified of taking responsibility for anything they do. They have given the presidency all of this authority so they can use the office as a scapegoat when things go bad. They want the job of senator or representative. They want the attention, the perks, the influence and the power, but they don’t want the actual responsibility that goes along with the job.

    1. I can agree with this. And it seems that people like their kings as much as they hate them. Good point about cowardism and Congress. Maybe that too, is why people love a king…someone to blame for their woes. They really only have as much power as we allow.

    2. It is called the Imperial Presidency. It started under Nixon and gained power over time. Clinton, Bush, Obama, and Trump rule by fiat now. (Executive Orders). They undo the previous President’s E.O. Congress has been ceding power from Nixon’s time.

  5. You are probably right Jim. I grew up as a kid completely oblivious to politics. And the country is still functioning, and we can hopefully recover from the orange idiot. However this orange idiot is a special kind of concern I have never seen.

    I wish I could just forget about it and go about enjoying my life. I remember the days of blissful unawareness of politics in my youth. It was a nice place.

  6. I cannot join you on this one. Interesting how much ‘I don’t do politics’ people have to say about government. So what? Seriously? DT does two things to me. He and his ilk scare the shit out of me; and he makes me feel ashamed of him, of the 60M+ who put him there, and the USA. Yes to ‘virulently despising.’ Criticize me for it, but at least I fucking care.

    1. I care too, Bill. I also care about my own sanity. I’ll be the first to admit I am out of the loop on the current situations, although I have started reading a bit lately on some fellow bloggers. As a bit of an outsider at this point in politics I just observe this trend. For eight years under Obama the right says the worlds going to end. They never let up. Now the pendulum swings. I can only hope in two years we get someone all Americans could be proud of. There have been a lot (21 since 1976) of government shutdowns. Is this really a big deal?

      1. I was part of several shutdowns. I was always paid and none lasted this long. All were stressful (sanity?). They are enormously wasteful and foolishly harmful. IMO, it is a big deal, especially when folks are not being paid. But it is only one of the big deals. Crazier when people are told to work without pay (to assume they will get paid). Politics and government are nuts in a contagious way, but I have no other manner to work it in a crazy world. We were not ‘under’ Obama. For most of that time everything else was controlled (stonewalled) by the other party. I have a different point of view and crazy or not, it matters a lot to me.
        You make a lot of noise about religion doing harm, yet you choose to stick your head in the sand when it matters most. Ambivalence can be most harmful. Check history. BTW, you’re the one who chose to write the post. I merely disagreed.

        1. Oh I don’t mind disagreement at all. I’m here to learn from you and everyone else, Though I don’t think I stick my head in the sand. I am aware, but for many years I was a news junkie and always on edge. I’m ok this way. How can two sides be so completely at odds and both think they are correct? That’s my dilemma. Something is in the water. The real America is in meeting your neighbors and visiting with strangers. Americans are pretty cool and I don’t think but a small percent of vocals are at odds at this level. They incite division and watch it flow through the county and smile. Divided we fall. It’s calculated (IMO) but, I could be wrong.

  7. Donald Trump is a change agent. The world has been working off of the reality of 1945, and hasn’t really changed much since. Trump is chaos meant to destroy the extreme order that has settled in place. We are going through a paradigm change, and a lot of people are unsettled.

      1. It is like going through the sound barrier in a creaky plane. The plane shakes until they get to the other side, when it is a smooth ride. Until then, no one feels safe.

        It is not a regression as people seem to think. What is happening is that the people who are yelling the loudest benefited greatly from the status quo. Clinton and Obama represent the status quo. Just change some social things but keep the economic and government structure in place.

        Remember people like Jeff Bezos have made a lot off of the status quo. The rich vote Democratic – the statistics of the last two elections (mid terms) is that the wealthiest areas are all now Democratic strong holds.

          1. Term limits is a mixed bag. But what has to be done is to restructure the system to get elected. Right now, both parties expect their people to spend 20 hours a week dialing for dollars. We are in a cycle of money from rich donors. Trump broke that with his own money and people’s money. Clinton got most of her money from Wall Street, who despise Trump.

  8. I left politics behind years ago, and was better off for it. But in 2016 that changed. I could feel the coming earthquake of destruction.
    If this era does cause real and useful change in how the USA elects and powers a government, it will be worth it. It sometimes takes upheaval to paint the real picture. But what happens if the agency of change (in this case el trumpo’s abuse of power) doesn’t bring positive change, but instead leaves the negative forces in power for an extended period of time? Or if the process of change becomes violent, as in a 2nd civil war? No matter who wins, EVERYONE LOSES! And I don’t mean just Americans…

    1. As much as I detest being part of a crowd, I live in a civilization. The people are creating the government they deserve. I can’t excuse my apathetic political self, but I’d rather my family like me than be an edgy prick all the time, which is what politics does to me. My core tries to make sense if things. It was a futile era of my life. I do vote, btw, and I read up on the local candidates, which in my area were 100% unchallenged Republicans this year. But, I have a safety net whereas Washington state overall is quite democrat. It’s an interesting little pocket here south of your eastern border.

      1. If only the State of Washington represented what was happening in its DC namesake all might be well. But the problem is the rats in DC are affecting Canada, and the rest of the world. I for one do not like having to live based on what happens below our southern border. Isn’t that the nature of nations?
        I do not vote. There is no one in this world worthy of my vote. Not one. But that does not take away my right to comment on how governments affect me, as some people seem to suggest. If everyone demanded better candidates as I do, situations like this present one would be easily avoided.

      2. Hi Jim, I think the game is rigged to begin with. It seems true the world over but I notice it particularly in America and the UK. We have this idea that choosing between Pepsi and Coke makes a difference. In reality, when viewed over decades, it is the same decline vector until we’ve ended up in the state we are in now. I suspect most people might agree that we live in an incredibly fragmented world in the west now. There isn’t the same social cohesion we had before and a lot of people think this is by design e.g. part of the New World Order agenda. Political membership os secretive organisations like the Bilderberg group, Trilateral Commission and Council on Foreign Affairs as a few examples.

        I think the Presidents and Prime Ministers are there to make it appear that we have political freedom and influence via this system, when in fact we’re always choosing the lesser of two evils these days and the money behind the politicians is what steers the boat, not the public. How many politicians keep their campaign promises, for example. Or if they do, end up doing more damage behind the scenes.

        Expending our energies bouncing like rubber balls between Democrat and Republican, or here in the UK, Labour and Conservative, is a way to diffuse our energies within a rigged system. Rigged financially to keep us all anxious about money, insecure about our security, fearful of the future our kids are facing, hateful towards foreign people we don’t even know who have been displaced by wars created by our governments etc. Mass refugee migration is, I believe, created by design to further fragment national identities and create huge resentment against the victims of war. Why? Divide and conquer as usual.

        I firmly believe that the political system is rotten to the core (look at how many US politicians are dual-national Israelis and who vote for Israeli interests over American ones, for example. Or the number of ties US politicians have to corporations they have financial interests in. Rumsfeld was, for example, behind the approval of Aspartame – a cancer causing sweetener whose licence the FDA kept refusing – whilst he had massive stock interests in it. Then there’s Monsanto, and Cheney and Halliburton etc. Meanwhile millions of kids in Yemen are literally dying of starvation and Trump and May continue to sell weapons to the Saudis. I sign petitions and write my MP (Member of Parliament) every week but on it goes….

        1. Exactly. There are always two wrong choices. Stephen, my inherent skill is ideation. I see seemingly disparate topics or events and tie them together. A lot of times this happens in my sleep while my mind works things out. The greatest trick has been to force us to take sides, choose the lesser evil (or the greater in some cases) even to the point of of passionately choosing things that that have no worth (coke or Pepsi). It is by design for marketers to play on our tribal nature we just can’t get over. The writers (god) those in power are not dumb. And it’s written in the Bible itself the necessity to keep us divided.

Although I do not believe in god, this is a sound principle that plagues humanity. United they were actually a threat to god (those in power?). Mere men working together could not be contained from “accomplishing anything they set out to do”.
          Everyone thinks it’s the others that are just crazy, and can’t see their own political alliances are just as damaging. It doesn’t matter who’s side you choose—they win, as long as we fall for the trick this will never change.

          1. Yes. It’s divide and conquer. Present us with Hobson’s choice – paradigms that don’t work – and say that’s all there is. The majority aren’t thinking critically, so they put an X in whatever box and so ends their responsibility.

            Binary economics is a third way that’s different, for example, to the two bad economic choices that we’re always given: socialism or capitalism. But the PR machine keeps churning out the same fears that keep us wedded to the bad choice we know well rather than engaging in creative, critical thinking that generates new paradigms that are genuinely good for humanity. It’s the same with energy, oil, healthcare, education etc.

            Where you and I differ is that I believe in God (needs qualifying) but not necessarily the bible as it’s been presented to us, especially the old testament. And not the church as a political institution.

            In the end, the worst thing that people can do is be divided against each other. There are forces in this world that benefit from this division, and they aren’t on our side (there is a huge amount of evidence of this available online). We don’t all need to agree, but we do all need to cooperate instead of competing so that we can have a life worth living and help put a stop to the madness that is going on around the world in our name. I don’t believe for a second that we can rely on politicians doing this for us.

I think I may have mentioned this to you before, but the precipice of the two choice illusion is between atheism and faith ( and they get to decide the nature of god we get to choose) There is a host of personal options based in individual experience, neurology, physiology, and inherent talents and abilities of each human to be in touch with the “spiritual” and all that has encompassed by differing cultures and practices throughout the millennia. Most of which have been eradicated by the two choice system.
              It’s interesting how the church outlawed people’s ability to chart their own course by labeling such practices in astrology and such as heathen, evil, dangerous, pagan, while all along continuing to use those things among themselves. Ever see the zodiac at St. Peter’s Basilica? They still use the universe (although poorly compared to the ancients) as their guide.

            3. You have to rely on the experts to teach you the simplicity of the gospel, or quit your day job. It’s so conflated and convoluted—that’s why even in the church people choose their own way. That’s the way it’s supposed to be, but we get stuck in the confines of a system and try to make the most of it. Sort of a plug n play with options you’re allowed to add on—but only so much.

    2. I agree. I think we now live in times where we call ourselves Americans or British or whatever, but this means less and less in real terms. Identifying ourselves according to national boundaries is now a way for the powers that be to herd our opinions and conformity. I think nations have been destroyed by globalized powers that have absolutely no patriotic sense and who only value money and power. They aren’t interested in America or Britain or any sovereign nation, and that includes politicians who appear to represent our interests. The game has changed and they only represent their own interests and the hidden agendas of globalised interests. There may be a few decent folks still in politics but genuineness isn’t a currency that’s very valuable in politics. And so many citizens are far too complacent to care one way or the other. The peoples’ strength is their ability to organise and work together, not trying to find an honest politician to lead them.

          1. Guess it is time to call a horse a goat. I DO NOT BELIEVE IN GOVERNMENT. Lawmakers are pretty tyrants, paying themselves for pretending to care about others, meanwhile caring only about getting re-elected so they can build up a nice retirement fund without having to do anything to earn it. There is so much more I could say, but why bother. Government is an exercise in futility–the more you get the less you want.

            2. Don’t believe in theocracy either. I believe in self-responsibility. The problem is that hardly anyone really knows how to be self-responsible. We have been taught for more generations than I care to think about that we need to be told how to live, and it doesn’t matter who does the telling. It has almost bred self-responsibility right out of us. But it is going to make a comeback, later if not sooner. Atheism is but one step in that direction.

    It has not changed since I was growing up in TN, listening to fine Christian pillars of the community spitting the N-word left and right in the country club.
    Then they’d get offended when they were called out in public and pushed back with talk about tradition, conservative individualism (Ayn Rand bullshit), and fairness – the same talk I hear from those MAGA-bitches now.

  10. I’m running for the Senate in 2020. My policy is to build gas chambers and crematoriums throughout the country to deal with the “problem” of the poor and the disabled. Really, do we need ’em? Do we need to pay taxes for idiotic programs to “help” ’em? Seriously? Naw. Gas ’em. Cremate ’em, and use their ashes to fertilize American veggie gardens. I feel my policy here is sound and will be backed by the all-loving power of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, TrueChristians every where, and the best/wealthiest 1% of America’s great citizens. Vote for IBTD1 in 2020. End poverty and needless taxation NOW!!! $Amen$

Well, I’ve always considered myself an independent who’s leaned left, but I’ve been changed by the joyous rapture I experience watching Trump and his ilk bringing the positive love and empathy they do to our fine country. So, I’m now a Christ-loving conservative Republican who believes in wiping out the poor and disabled, literally, and making America a true, tax free, Christian theocracy so the all-encompassing love of Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ can be shared with every single American whether they want it to be or not. I say, let’s gas and cremate ALL disabled and poor/lazy people, who are sucking our country dry of resources, so we can give rich people handouts, OOPS, I mean tax cuts, and deport anyone who doesn’t agree with my idea of a TrueChristian, theocratic, Federal government. $Amen$

              You know what sucks. There are a few disabled vets in my building who are complaining that their food stamps are gonna be cut off due to this gov’t shut down. I mean, COME ON!!!! How friggin’ LAZY can ya’ get!!!! Why in the name of Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, should MY tax dollars be going to pay for some disabled person’s food in the first place???!!! Talk about a friggin’ WASTE of MY hard earned money!!! If anything good at all comes out of this shut down, it will be to expose the lazy bastards out there getting free food on OUR tax dollar!!! Christ, this is NOT good. See, if we just gassed and cremated ALL of these poor and disabled lazy bastards, we’d have more $$ in our pockets. We actually WORKED for it!!!!!   11. It matters who governs because real people are suffering and much of the suffering is avoidable. Racism, worse, violent acts of racism by both the state and individuals are on the rise. Agricultural policy is degrading the land — we only have 40 years of fertile soil left. People in a rich land go to bed hungry. The sick are abandoned if they happen to be poor. It is not ok to prop up the fossil fuel industry when we know we headed to climate chaos. It is not ok to fail to regulate the poisoning of land when we are facing an extinction emergency. It is not ok that the system is so corrupt. That mass media only presents gossip, spectacle and horse races when we need to have real policy debates to find solutions. It is unacceptable that media outlets are owned by the same corporations that actually govern. So I’d say it does matter who is in power. Ending the rant now =)

    1. Rant away. I agree with all those things. I just wish that changed something. We need another plan of attack. Many of the things you mentioned I am very passionate about and didn’t consider every angle on this short post. I do my personal part, but wow!! Something needs to stop the pillaging.

      1. I think there is a choke point in this flow. American needs to get corporate money out of politics. If people get involved in primaries (either party, doesn’t matter) and refuse to support anyone (incumbent or not) who accepts even a penny of corporate money that will make a huge difference. Spread the word among your friends that a vote for any politician who is already bought is a vote against themselves.

  14. Hello Jim. I like your post but I do wonder at one part. tRump has shown so far he is willing and able to ignore / undo every normal and expected convention. What makes anyone think there will be a peaceful transition? tRump has been laying the groundwork for some time about the deep state and rigged elections. If the republicans keep supporting him either out of fear or primary or because they are taking money from Russia then what will force him from office? The SCOTUS has no police force. The single sergeant of arms of the Congress is not going to do much. Will it be an armed stand off between the Secret service protecting tRump and the capital police force trying to remove him? I am not the only one who thinks he will be harder to remove now that he is in there, he is sort of like mold, far smarter people than me have been asking the question. Hugs

    My response — I felt nothing really. Politicians have little if any effect on reality or society. I deal with technology, the kind that ends jobs for millions and makes countries go broke or go to the mars. Tech is the only thing that changes anything.

    Phone, tv, radio, car, train, computer

    And soon

    AI, cyborgs, nanites, robots

    Trump is no more important than any of the other numbers in that outdated list

    1. I had to ask. It really doesn’t affect me either unless I let it. As much as I have voiced my thoughts on the two-ways, the crippling biases that we suffer, everyone seems to exempt themselves from the data. I have to be very careful not to get duped with my trusting personality. It takes effort to be aware that things aren’t quite what one thinks they are. I see both sides in a pretty negative light when it comes to politics. Nearly everyone is guilty.

        My response — Most likely due to money. It’s a hard temptation to pass on.

        Possibly shorter terms would help with more public visibility and an end to the two party rule.
