Reincarnation

If reincarnation is real, what is it exactly that is being reintroduced? It certainly isn’t the biology, the dna, or any physical likeness. It is data that is recycled—everything is data and electrical impulses. Even your food is measured in calories, or energy content.

Our physical world is a system of inseparable differences. Everything exists with everything else. Left and right are one process. If thoughts are real they are permanent data structures that come and go and transcend life and death.

Life isn’t serious. It is completely unnecessary. Why is there something rather than nothing? For his pleasure it was imagined into existence. It is for play—to relive the boredom’s of infinite living.

Theorists such as Roger Penrose, who won the Nobel Prize in Physics, have conjectured that quantum effects underpin consciousness, but this theory is just as lacking as any other theory. Researchers cannot even agree on what form a theory of consciousness should take.

The Polaroid is maybe the best example of creation—the image appears all at once out of the blackness, yet nothing of substance is added to it.

  1. There’s a kid who said his past life was on Mars and pointed out geographical locations with baffling accuracy. Have you heard? There are other instances of shocking coincidences. They’re interesting at least.

  2. I cannot tell if you are pro or con reincarnwtion, Jim, but you pretty much have it right in a spurious sort of way. Life is energy, and energy retains a sort of data.
Reincarnatio does not involve ego or minds, but rather life energies. The energy of life that is in us is infinite, not as individuals, but rather as receptacles of life. Not facts and figures, or geographical information, but the intricacies of being alive are built upon through reincarnation. This is an unending process which spans dimensions and time as we know it.
So when you say data, you are close. But life is not subservient to facts, only to understanding existence.
This is how I understand reincarnaton.

    1. The experiences share a common thread—Data is being recalled. The idea of a soul is just an explanatory add-on. That coupled with the fact that whatever life is made of, it isn’t substantive of anything fundamentally real. Particles are excitations in an energy field. When you die nothing of your sort is retained, unless you believe it so much your energy is confined to heaven or hell to detox.

      1. I never mentioned soul, or heaven, or any such word so I have no idea why you are feeding them bavk to me. They play no part in the process of life. Nor does the god word.
Life is something so few people are willing to look at. To most of us it is just some thing that happens at birth, and unhappens at death. Understandable, in that we have no real experience with anything else. But life is so much more than what we see here on Earth.

          1. Experiences! Not just experience.
I have no need to convince anyone of anything. Just giving infornation (data) that was given to me. What you choose to believe is up to you.
But I will add this: about 54 years now, and those experiences are still affecting my life consciously, every day. I have firgotten so many other experiences I had, yet those ones are always front and center to me.
Sure, I might be insane, or just fooling myself, but i did not must make this up. They are “lived” experiences, not mere hallucinations.

            2. I inherited no non-physical traits from my sperm donor, or even my egg supplier as far as I know. She died while I was a child, so I cannot say if I am like her or not. I am my own self-made person. And karma’s a bitch, I hear. If someone is keeping records of everyone’s good and bad deeds, they need a bigger supercomputer than any computer ever designed on Earth, and a hekkuva lot of busybody data input personnel to decide whether acts/intentions are good or bad. That sounds like a great job for God, and you and I both know there is no god!

So, that last part of your comment is interesting. Here we have the Hebrew god keeping tabs on every deed, watching everything, or we have secular surveillance, video cameras, gps, tracking, google tracking your clicks, dating apps tracking your preferences, shopping habits, listening surveillance, wire tapping, checkout cameras, passports, and likely many things we don’t know about. Is is really far fetched for a busybody? The eye in the sky is very detailed.
One day I went to google earth to look at my house and the filters were off. I could see the strata in the gravel on my driveway and the birdshit on my fence rails. I could see the discolored shingle on my roof. This is the all seeing eye of mythology from an ancient, advanced civilization.

You too live away from the madding crowd. Do you really get recorded that much?
Yes, Big Brother is watching, but that creates a lot of useless data in most cases. Spam that makes it through my spam filter just gets deleted. We are all capable of doing that.

  3. From a Polytheist point of view, people only come back if they have unfinished business. Otherwise, they become the Ancestors and all kinds of the Dead. (We have multitude groupings of various Dead.) The only people in my neck of the woods who discuss reincarnation are Neo-Pagans who have adopted various New Age beliefs.

  4. Re “It is data that is recycled—everything is data and electrical impulses. Even your food is measured in calories, or energy content.”

You take one hypothetical, reincarnation, and back it up by another. To claim that one person is the reincarnation of another, what exactly do the two share? Memories, I assume, but otherwise? Do, they look alike? Smell alike? Not required apparently. As data goes, memories are plastic and unreliable, so they would hardly make a good medium for execution of a reincarnation. They do make for good conjuror’s tricks though. (How could he possibly have recalled that?)

The “everything is information” argument is popular in current philosophy as it stems from the explanation of how dumb atoms can be assembled into smart people. The answer is “arrangement.” Since only four element’s atoms are involved in the core, it can’t be types of atoms that are the source of molecular, then cellular, then organismal behaviors. You can take the atoms of a cow and make a human (you do it every time you eat a hamburger or steak). But to confuse how things are arranged with the things themselves is a major mistake, I suggest. (Think about it.)

  6. If you don’t have your memory, that is, continuity of being, then what is there re-in-bodyment. Christians hope for our reincarnation (…a body incorruptible). We’ll remember our life here but we’ll have new bodies. (By “we” I mean the segment of the grand being that I am) Both Jesus and John the baptist seemed to have been conscious in the womb of their mothers. Jesus later equates John with Elijah who was to appear again. He says, “if you can believe it, John is Elijah.” But… then again, I have no continuity of being when I’m asleep. I’m just gone. Then I awake and I am again with full memory (+-). So maybe here I am asleep to my greater self (which is still less than the great I Am), unable to remember it until I awaken through death. Thanks for the plunge Jim.

    1. What does it take to create a soul, a unit of being, a separate permanent consciousness? How long does it take? Perhaps millions of lives starting with the simplest form like paramecium and evolving from one embodiment to the next increasing in sentient solidity until perfected and eternal. In this scenario ego and a very separate self develop until perfectly and permanently formed. A child of the eternal parent. Separate, equally eternal, bound by spirit (consciousness ) the trinity? Jesus said, “I am the way…” I hear “you have to become a child of the I Am” or “you will become…” In this way, “receiving Jesus” is accepting one’s divine destiny, not just “getting saved to go to heaven” but completing a journey, a long gestation.

    1. The problem with the current definitions of reincarnation is it holds too many contradictions to be true. First you would have to prove you’re an individual soul (whatever that is) which in itself contradicts an all omnipotent and omnipresent god. Unless you’re him, then it works fine.
Second of all, scientific evidence is not proof—evidence is always changed by further proofs.
The only proof there is, is information is being passed down at a level we don’t understand. Data is being shared in an electronic system—that’s all we know.

  8. Smiles, you are giving lame reasons jim. the scientific evidence is in front of you but still you don’t want to accept it. The professors of UVA are not writing a fiction story and presenting a false data. About 2500 live cases has been investigated in 60 years. These are all real cases which they have investigated personally in different countries.

So, as a honest atheist you have to be fair. you cannot presume now itself by saying that, future evidence will supersede the present evidences. Right?

    1. Name a theory or hypothesis that has not changed its tune at some point?
I have several posts here promoting the idea of reincarnation and have no problem with it per se, but it is a Hindu idea that contradicts its own doctrine. Who were you in a past life? Who are you anyway, really? Can you tell me that?
What do we actually know?? What is it that is being recycled? It isn’t dna, lineage, race, etc…it is data. The same data that produces the same ideas to different people in different places at the same time.
I would also submit that people are being born with memory from others who are still living, which really puts a hamper on the whole idea of individual souls. No, we are not separate from the whole thing. If you can illustrate how that could possibly be true I’ll listen. Great topic for sure!

I’m pretty sure I’ve learned more about reincarnation than most and I find it interesting. It just carries too many contradictions and supposition to be believed.
It’s data. That’s all we know and it fits better with informaron theory than life after life. It’s data recycled.

  13. It’s mind. Jim. Mind is a subtle element of our body. This mind carries our desires and subtle body. As soon as our gross body fails this subtle mind along with soul is transmigrated to other body. According to the material desire such living entity develops a particular eyes, ears, all the human anatomy.

    1. Actually body is a subtle element of the mind. If you understand a fraction of quantum mechanics you see this, even though they are careful nowadays in their verbiage to avoid it. When you break it all down there is nothing at all to examine except a tremendous amount of energy. “ Those who are not shocked when they first come across quantum mechanics cannot possibly have understood it”
When your body dies their is no more essence of “you” or your ego, which is a perception of bodily autonomy, except for the humans that still believe they are real, and they are “them”

    1. Not really. Everything has an emergence and a retreat. The problem in comprehending total death is hopeful beliefs of continuation. But you will not continue as you, but all your ideas and thoughts have been absorbed into the whole, when you are dead their is no thing to remember because you were never you to begin with.
This is a cultural misstep that does not exist in more grounded, earthy communities of indigenous people. This is a learned behavior in the west that contradicts what we actually know—usurped by errant beliefs. And why are beliefs necessary at all…they are not real.

    1. Great comment. I always like to have discussions with a towering intellect like yourself.
Define a soul. The UVA professors have an assumption in their hypothesis that they have granted themselves, that there is such thing as a soul. Define soul and illustrate the possibility how you are a separate entity from the whole as a cosmic individual.
I told you earlier I have no problem with reincarnation as an idea. It’s cool. But it’s only data, no souls needed.
BTW, these professors of academia you put so much faith in—these are the intellectual class, the experts, that have the world of education, finance, and morality right where it is today, and you trust them. That’s troubling.
