Memes—True or False

Been seeing a lot of these lately

Memes by believers™️ are as popular as ever, but are they true? Are there none who can escape their bias? Here’s one I picked up this week;

“A bit of science distances one from God, but much science nears one to Him”—Louis Pasteur

What is true though, would be true for believer and nonbelievers alike. It wouldn’t require a belief to be true, but would be self evident. The above statement is a meaningless whereas no gods ever mentioned are a natural conclusion.

Before one studies Zen, mountains are mountains and waters are waters; after a first glimpse into Zen, mountains are no longer mountains and waters are no longer waters; after enlightenment, mountains are once again mountains and waters once again waters”—Dōgen

To study things as an illusion it becomes an illusion, only to finally realize things are exactly as they seem. The search is over—there is nothing to discover.

The futility of the search, to persist at finding meaning, we ultimately find there is no need to practice erroneous methods, or worship particular beliefs.

And another—

Gravity explains the motions of the planets, but it cannot explain who sets the planets in motion”—Isaac Newton.

This is what Christians meme about when the parental controls are off.

Who…or what? Newton was undoubtedly one of the greatest scientists and most influential figures of all time, but the influence of the environment was still strong on him.

Around 100 years after the Principia was published, the French mathematician Pierre-Simon Laplace answered Newton’s question of “how planets do not get thrown out of the solar system”—and that god puts them back in. He showed with mathematical rigor that the solar system is stable over very long periods and that the planetary orbits were stable indefinitely.

Are you under the influence of your environment, as Newton was to his? Is everything completely explainable, or will god continue to wait in the wings long after theories are improved?
